On 26th February the third of five rounds of the Poznań Debate League, a tournament of Oxford-style debates for secondary schools from the City of Poznań, took place at the Faculty of Human Geography and Planning of Adam Mickiewicz University. The topics of debates were related to the issues of research conducted at the Faculty (revitalization, public spaces), including the perspective and problems of the city of Poznań. The 16 teams of four representing Poznań secondary schools together with teachers and supporters took part in the games.

A week before the League round was held, the Faculty’s research and teaching staff provided participants with additional substantive support through introductory lectures on the subject of debates. They also sat as experts in the judges’ panels assessing teams during the competition (prof. Adam Radzimski, Dr Przemysław Ciesiółka, Dr Radosław Bul, and Dr Łukasz Mikuła, coordinator of the league round)

The Poznań Debate League project is organized by the Educational Projects Foundation and the Youth Vocational Counseling Center, with the support of the Poznań City Hall. The goal of the league is:

  • promoting high standards of public debate, such as respect for the opponent and the ability to listen and discuss in a friendly manner;
  • developing youth communication skills, encouraging young people to work on their own rhetorical skills;
  • dissemination of the idea of ​​Oxford-style debates in secondary schools and in the academic community;
  • dissemination of knowledge in the field of various scientific disciplines in an attractive and engaging form;
  • presentation of the offer of Poznań universities.

All participants in the competition, as well as the coordinators of the League highly rated the organizational and educational efforts of our Faculty.
