From September 25 to 30, 2019, the 61st Deutsche Kongress für Geographie (German Congress of Geography, Deutscher Geographentag until 2015) took place at our partner Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel. This is a scientific conference of geographers from German-speaking countries that is held every two years, with a tradition of over 100 years (organised for the first time in 1865 in Frankfurt am Main). In this year’s Congress over 2,000 people took part (including those from outside the German language area) in nearly 200 scientific sessions. The motto of the conferences was “Umbrüche und Aufbrüche. Geographie der Zukunft“(Changes and new beginnings. Geography (-ies) of the future).

Three scientists from our Faculty participated in the Congress: Dr hab. Anna Tobolska, Dr Urszula Kaczmarek and Prof. Dr hab. Tomasz Kaczmarek. Dr hab. Anna Tobolska presented a paper entitled “Lokals Netzwerke transnationaler Korporationen – Beispiel von Konzernbetrieben Volkswagen AG und Exide Technologies in Polen“. It was delivered during a session led by Prof. Dr. Peter Danneberg (Geographisches Institut Universität zu Köln) and Prof. Dr. Martin Franza (Institut für Geographie Universität Osnabrück). The two-part session was devoted to the subject of spatial manifestations of global value chains (“Räumliche Manifestierungen von Globalen Wertketten”). Dr Urszula Kaczmarek at the session “Ländliche Peripherien in Europa als Räume des Wandels: Positionierungsstrategien in der Postwachstumsgesellschaft”, gave a paper on “Die Ideas von Cittàslow als die Entwicklungstrategie von Kleinstädten in Deutschland, Italien und Polen”. In turn, Prof. Tomasz Kaczmarek as part of the session “Und langsam wachsen wir zusammen? Kooperationsräume, -formen und -verständnis in der Raumordnung und Regionalentwicklung “, presented a paper on “Verschiedene Wege zur Institutionalisierung und Governance-Formen der Metropolregionen. Erfahrungen aus Polen”.

On the evening of September 26th an official gala opened the Congress chaired by Prof. Rainer Wehrhahn (photo below) – an organiser of the Congress on behalf of CAU Kiel, whom we hosted at our Faculty during the Kiel Days in November 2018. In the second photo, our representatives in the company of Prof. Axel Priebs, co-founder of the Hanover Region, currently lecturer at the University of Vienna.
